5 Days Free State and Lesotho Tour
DAY TO DAY ITINERARY
Day 1
Depart Johannesburg / Pretoria for the Eastern Free State.
In the Golden Gate Highlands National Park experience the beauty of the most amazing sandstone rock formations. This 11 600 hectares of unique environment is true highland habitat, providing home to a variety of mammals including black wildebeest, eland, blesbok, oribi, springbok and Burchell’s zebra – and birds, including the rare bearded vulture (lammergeier) and the equally rare bald ibis, which breed on the ledges in the sandstone cliffs.
Clarens was laid out in the foothills of the Rooiberge and named for the village in Switzerland where President Paul Kruger died in 1904 while in exile. It is known as the artists’ town and the jewel of the Free State. This is a wonderful little village full of delightful shops, art galleries and its own brewery, whose brewer has a passion for micro brewed beer. The well-known SA artist Frans Claerhout lived in the area and you will find some of his works in the numerous galleries.
Day 2
Depart for the Lesotho Border.
Enter Lesotho at one of the most beautiful border posts in the world.
Travel over the truly magnificent Mafika-Lisiu mountain pass to wonder, not only at what nature has to offer in the form of spectacular scenery, but to be lost in admiration at what man can achieve in the likes of the Katze Dam, the Lesotho Highlands Water engineering project of the decade. Enjoy a cruise on the dam (optional).
At the Katze Dam Botanical Garden extensive pathways will lead you pass the displays of Sesotho traditional medicinal plants and other unique plants.
Opportunity to go on a hike or take a walk through the rural village of Pitseng
Day 3
Travel to Roma, site of the National University of Lesotho.
On route we will visit the Leribe Craft Centre. We will visit the Kome Caves where cave dwellings have been carved out under towering rocks. Families living there are descendants of the original people who built the caves and are still living the same as their forefathers did.
